If you are in the market for an upright exercise bike you are no doubt surprised by not only how many options there are available to you but the wide range of price tags on these bikes. Although buying a bike within your price range is important, if you are serious about working out, it may be worth saving for a bike that meets all of your needs. If you if you take the time to ask yourself a few important questions, you should have no trouble at all finding your perfect bike.

Will This Bike Be Comfortable Enough for Me to Use?

Upright exercise bikes are notorious for being uncomfortable mainly due to the seat. If the seat is the only problem with the bike that you can see, consider purchasing a gel seat. It will make the seat much more comfortable and in turn, help you feel more comfortable while working out. Look for a bike that has an adjustable seat and adjustable handle bars. If possible, find one that has multiple adjustment positions so you can have more control over how you will be positioned when you ride. This will make the bike much more comfortable to use and make you want to use it more often. If the bike doesn't seem to offer much in terms of adjustability, you may want to consider another option, especially if you are shorter or taller than average height.

What Do I Need in Terms of Features?

This may seem like a given, but it a key factor many people overlook. The word ‘need' is important here. If you are a novice, chances are you don't need sixteen levels of resistance to begin with. You may instead want to choose something with eight levels of resistance and consider upgrading down the line when you feel you need to. There is no need to pay for a more expensive bike with more levels of resistance if you aren't going to use them.

The one feature you absolutely need to have that some less expensive bikes don't have is a heart rate monitor. What kind of heart rate monitor you choose depends on what you find most comfortable. Telemetry is one of the most popular options as it is versatile to use, although hand grip heart rate sensors are the most popular. These are effective and come equipped on many less expensive models. You can also choose a bike that comes with a chest strap if you find that more comfortable.

What optional features you choose will depend on how you plan to use your bike. If you want to read while you exercise, look for a bike that comes with a reading or magazine rack. Many people also like bikes that come with built in water bottle holders as this is far more convenient that trying to find somewhere to set your water bottle while you workout.

Do I Need Integrated Workout Programs and User Profiles?

Although both of these options are extremely beneficial to those that have problems staying motivated to keep up with their workers, they may not be necessary for everyone. These programs help you keep track of your progress in your workout however so that might be something you should consider. You won't always notice improvement and may not see the signs of it right away in your appearance so having a way to keep track of your progress can be a great way to keep you from getting discouraged.
